For John Wick, that meant expertly choreographed gunfights and a lurid, moody atmosphere. ![]() However, films like John Wick (which was also produced by Iwanyk) and Logan succeeded because they understood their core concepts and had a distinct aesthetic vibe. Even if Tom Hardy can carry a franchise on name recognition alone, it’s a massive and unnecessary gamble for Ubisoft to take. This is due to the popularity of stars like Johnny Depp and Tom Cruise. Movies like Dead Men Tell No Tales and The Mummy were rescued by their overseas performances. The other type features films shot on a much lower budget and become big hits due to critical success. One features large budgets used to deliver middle-of-the-road-quality movies that underperform domestically. But sitting in the second tier of movies that tend to perform well without shattering box office records, are a completely different ball game. The minds behind the film understand that in today’s world of mega-franchises, their movie starts off at a clear disadvantage. Generic Action Doesn’t Sell Anymore Keanu Reeves in 'John Wick: Chapter 2' More importantly, it sets the film up for failure. To say that this gives the filmmakers license to “make up” the film’s world to create a “Tom Hardy action movie” is absurd. Early instalments of the game could even fail a player for using too much violence.īoth the concept and the characters have a very specific backstory: Sam Fisher is a veteran black ops agent who is brought out of retirement to work for Third Echelon, an NSA initiative specialising in information warfare. Splinter Cell is a stealth game that downplays combat. There have already been articles pointing out that everything in that statement is untrue. That allowed us to make up our own world and really augment and fill out the characters … I think it’ll feel like a badass, Tom Hardy action movie, which is what we wanted. And so the challenge of making Splinter Cell interesting was we didn’t have this IP with a very specific backstory. Splinter Cell really is a first-person shooter game. In an interview with Collider, Basil Iwanyk, one of the film’s producers said: Misunderstanding the Splinter Cell Series Let’s look at why Ubisoft’s refusal to embrace the unique gimmicks of the Splinter Cell games dooms the movie before it even begins shooting. Now, recent statements from producers indicate that the film may not resemble the iconic game series at all. Filming keeps getting pushed back–Tom Hardy, supposedly attached to play Sam Fisher, has been posting updates for years. The film keeps losing directors–Doug Liman was once attached but has moved on. However, what news we have heard should trouble fans. Pick up my sci-fi novels, The Last Exodus, The Exiled Earthborn and The Sons of Sora, which are now in print, online and on audiobook. It is difficult to pin down any specifics on the Splinter Cell film rumoured to be in development. But Splinter Cell trying to run away from both the game it’s based on, and really the very concept of being a video game adaptation altogether does not inspire much confidence, and I hope The Division doesn’t go down that same path.įollow me on Twitter and on Facebook. Despite the many flaws of Assassin’s Creed, it was in many ways a beautiful film, and I would argue the best game-to-movie adaptation so far, however low that bar might be set. I admire Ubisoft’s determination in sprinting forward to really try and make the whole video game movie thing happen. And even that might not be enough to keep it together/make it worthwhile if it is ever actually made. Splinter Cell has already lost one director, the state of the script is unknown, and the only thing it seems to have left is Tom Hardy. I’m a lot more interested to see how The Division movie turns out, which already has a director and all-star cast attached to it (Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain), along with arguably better source material to work with. But I can’t imagine that Splinter Cell is going to turn into something terribly good, given how long the film has been stewing, and let’s be honest, Splinter Cell isn’t exactly the hottest gaming property around these days either. I understand why this can work sometimes, as often the exact stories found in games do not really lend themselves to translation in films, which we’ve seen time and time again. But everything else will just be turned into whatever action story they want to make. Yes, Tom Hardy’s character will be named Sam Fisher and there will be glowing night vision goggles and he will probably drop down from the ceiling at one point. From the looks of these Splinter Cell comments, it seems like that movie is going to get even further away from the games to the point where it really doesn’t even care about them at all. ![]()
